NEC Language.
210.8 (A) GFCI Protection of dwelling units. The 2020 changes as well as the 2023
revisions were reviewed and discussed. It was recommended to forward this
review to the BCCC for further discussion with added language to amend the code
stating that “For 250 volt receptacles in 1 and 2 family dwellings shall be excluded
from GFCI Protection” A Motion to “Forward review of 210.8 (A) to the larger BCCC
review group with added language exempting only one and two family dwellings
from GFCI requirements on 240v receptacles.” (Shanker motion, Saunders 2nd.)
Group voted and favored this amendment to be drafted prior to BCCC review with
a 4-2 vote.
210.8 (B) GFCI other than dwelling units. The 2020 changes as well as the 2023
revisions were reviewed and discussed. This also brought up discussion of the
need for more protection in apartment buildings and commercial as compared to
residential one and two family dwellings. After continued discussion.
210.8(D) GFCI protection specific appliances was reviewed and the newly
implemented list of the 2023 NEC is recommended to be reviewed by the BCCC
due to its impact on other amendments. Revisit this discussion at later date.
210.8(E) Equipment requiring servicing was presented and the discussion revolved
around the attic requirement and the need to have GFCI protection in an attic.
Saunders made a motion to adopt as is but was not 2nd. Therefore it was agreed to
send to the larger BCCC as no motion to close discussion would be made at this
level.
210.8(F) GFCI protection of outdoor outlets was reviewed with respect to both the
2020 changes and the 2023 changes. Discussion centered on outside lighting circuits
and convenience receptacles impacted by this change. The exceptions were
reviewed as well and a consensus was not reached. This discussion will move to the
BCCC for further evaluation with recommendation to add language to Exception 2
that changes the expiration date to the adoption of the next successive code cycle
instead of January 2026.
210.12(C) was presented and it was recommended by City Staff to look at all the
sub-sections due to reformatting in the 2023 NEC. This was tabled and sent to
BCCC due to Arc Fault impacts on one and two family contractors.
210.52 (C)(2) Required outlets at countertops were discussed with new 2023
impacts for provisions. This was discussed with new architectural demands to
avoid outlets in islands. All agreed this needs further review by the BCCC
