Director's Report - Rebecca Roesslet
For the director's report Shikles is here filling in for Roesslet as she could not attend the
meeting tonight. Shikles begins the director's report by telling how the State did a press
release about the West Nile virus and its increasing numbers in the state. Adding that it
was the first week of Flu season. Shikles brings up that there has been the first human
case of New World Screwworm, it was not in Missouri it was in Maryland, but Shikles
adds how it could be a threat to livestock.
Moving on to federal updates she tells how the government shutdown still continues, but
it is not impacting the operations of the Health Department at this time. It does delay
some of the federal payments that are received, because there is funding from the federal
government. Continuing Shikles speaks about how the ACIP has made new
recommendations on the Covid-19 vaccination. Those recommendation are that all
individuals six months or older can receive the vaccine. She explains how the Health
Department Clinic is handling the vaccinations, and that is an individual can come in and
speak with a public health nurse and receive the Covid-19 vaccination. Shikles also
mentions briefly about some of the other recommendations that were made. She tells
how there will be no school flu clinics this year due to funding cuts.
Continuing Shikles wanted to mention a group recently formed called One Health
Network, it is a group of individuals from various organizations that meet to discuss
emerging topics and epidemiology and encourage collaboration across human,
environmental, and animal fields. She mentions it to see if anyone on the board would be
interested in joining.
Moving forward, Feirman asks Shikles if they have gotten any questions about vaccines
given the changes and advice that has been given, Shikles answers she is sure that they
have at the clinic. Feirman also wanted to know with the government shutdown, does
WIC have sufficient funds, because that is something that some states have been losing.
Shikles thinks that Missouri could be one of those states if the shutdown continues.
Before finishing up, Shikles goes over again what will happen for the next meeting. Rose
volunteered to review and discuss with Meyers and Roesslet the criteria language being
added. Shikles lets the board know that the language and where it can be found in the
ordinance will be sent out to them and that they will also be reviewing the presentation for
pre-council at the next meeting. It is brought up if legal could be at the next meeting as
they had talked about meeting with legal previously, but the board decides that they
would wait till a later meeting when they could spend more time with legal.
