Columbia. Schaeffer gave remarks to the group on his background and current work with

Minutes from Oct. 22, 2024
V. OLD BUSINESS
New Member to the Task Force
New member Chief Schaeffer mentioned that the previous fire apparatus which had the
U.S.S. Columbia plaque affixed to it has gone out of service and a new apparatus is
available. He brought the plaque to show the group and stated he would be open to a
ceremony once it is installed. The group agreed that during an upcoming crew visit would
be an appropriate time.
Christmas Cards
Moore asked if Christmas cards had been sent by anyone. Wischmeyer had a bundle
that has yet to go out that will be mailed, and Moore stated that the crew who has been
deployed since before Christmas will get them when they return soon.
Review of 2024 Crew Visit
Moore gave an overview of the 2024 crew visit, which was reviewed at the previous
meeting.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
30th Anniversary of Commissioning
Possible Dates
Moore stated that the 30th anniversary of the commissioning is coming up - as it was
commissioned on Oct. 9, 1995. The crew has expressed interest in visiting Columbia to
honor this milestone, and the group is looking at dates for this fall. Ideally, their visit
would fall during an MU home football game. Proposed dates were Sept. 20 (playing
against Columbia, SC, which is another namesake City), Oct. 11 (playing against
Alabama), and Nov. 8 (playing against Texas A&M and it will also be the annual military
game). Moore asked if there were any other known conflicts with events happening this
fall. Dresser stated that there is a Chamber leadership visit that will occur Sept. 30 - Oct.
2, and typically many City and University leaders attend that and will be out of town.
Moore stated that she would try to be in contact with the crew once they return from
deployment to start planning. Navy funding will play a factor, as their fiscal year begins on
Oct. 1.
Mayor's Reception with Chamber of Commerce
Once a date has been determined, more planning can start on a Mayor's reception for the
visit.
VII. REPORTS
Submarine Updates
Moore stated that the boat has been deployed since before Christmas and will likely
return in the coming weeks around Memorial Day. She has emailed, but often messages
are hard to go through or get a response while they are deployed. Moore hopes to be in
contact soon once they return to Pearl Harbor and planning can begin on the visit and
secure a date.
VIII. GENERAL COMMENTS BY PUBLIC, MEMBERS AND STAFF
A question was raised about involvement with the Jefferson City submariner group.
Moore stated that there is a U.S.S. Jefferson City, and that is the purpose of that group.
During the upcoming visit, it was proposed that getting down to the Capitol would be part
of the agenda and a meeting with the Governor would plan to be arranged.
IX. NEXT MEETING DATE
Staff will look at availability of June dates.
X. ADJOURNMENT
Motion to adjourn at 3:26 p.m. made by John Clark, seconded by Lantzy; motion
carried.
