Sculpture on the Move Program: Committee selections for North Village
Park
Dresser shared that the City plan to become a member of the Creative Communities
Alliance and take part in its Sculpture on the Move program, which pairs artworks with
cities for display on two-year terms. Ahead of the selection draft, the participating city will
determine its top ranked choices from artwork that is available, and then works are
matched with the community. City of Columbia plans to utilize this program with the new
North Village Park.
Gabe Huffington gave an overview of the North Village Park and the locations on the
perimeter of the park that are suitable for rotating art works. The Sculpture on the Move
program will make it possible for art work to be installed right away, while other public art
projects can be installed over time (for example the art benches and entrance sign, as
well as a potential large-scale public art piece in the center of the park).
Dresser had sent the selection of eligible art works (over 200) to the committee ahead of
the meeting, and each member sent staff their top 10-15 choices. At this meeting, the
committee's top 42 art works are under consideration. Several members had chosen the
same pieces, so those artworks were ranked at the top as choices. The group went
through all of the eligible works to determine which top choices to move forward. The
group ultimately ranked the works as follows:
1. Every Piece Has a Place by Alexander Mendez
2a. Gotta Practice by Lee Leuning & Sherri Treeby
2b. (if 2a. is unavailable) Tulip by Travis Baker
3. Bet You Can't Pin Me Down by Justin Deister
4a. Magnify by Kirk Seese
4b. (if 4am is unavailable) Icosahedron by Kirk Seese
5. The Day Gertrude Flew the Coop by Glory Hartsfield
6. propensity by Ben Pierce
7. Bunny for Nothing by Craig Snyder
8. Peeps by Jessie Cargas
9. To the Moon by Howard Russo
10. Twist by Howard Russo
Dresser will submit this list to Creative Community Alliance ahead of the selection draft,
which will take place on Feb. 19, 2026.
The plan would be for these works to be ready to install in the park by its opening in early
fall 2026.
Upcoming public art projects
Dresser and Huffington gave an overview of the other public art opportunities currently
underway for the North Village Park (entrance sign and art benches) as well as Flat
Branch Park. Those calls for artists close on Feb. 9, 2026.
