VI. NEW BUSINESS
Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Sports Development Application
The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) submitted a Sports
Development Application to the Columbia Sports Commission requesting $15,000 for
three of their events being held in Columbia. Funds would be used for site fees and
streaming expenses for the Norm Stewart Classic, the Sophie Cunningham Classic, and
the Missouri Basketball Coaches Clinic in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
The Norm Stewart Classic is no longer 48 hours of continuous play, but instead it will be
a three day event. The Sophie Cunningham Classic started in 2023 and was a huge
success with over 200 players. The coaches clinic brings in approx 800 basketball
coaches from across the state. All three events generate over 900 room nights. The
Columbia Sports Commission reviewed the application at their November 9th meeting
and have recommended approval of the application for $15,000.
