Update on Missouri State High School Activities Association Events
A proposal was officially submitted in partnership with the University of Missouri to
continue hosting 11-man football at Memorial Stadium for only the 2024-2025 academic
year. This included $7,500 in funding from the Tourism Development Fund. The MSHSAA
Board and staff accepted the proposal from Columbia and the event was awarded to
Columbia for the 2024-2025 academic season, valuing the experience they can provide
their student athletes. A decision was not made on the location of the event after the
2024-2025 season.
Eight-man football is moving to either Chillicothe or St. Joseph, Missouri.
Ziervogel thanked everyone on the Sports Commission that was able to attend the
MSHSAA Basketball Sponsors Appreciation Reception held in December.
The CVB is still recruiting team hosts for the MSHSAA Show-Me Showdown State
Basketball Tournament in March of 2024.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
Sports Development Application - National Middle School Basketball State Championship
A tourism development application for the 2024 Missouri Middle School Basketball
Championships was reviewed and discussed. The organizer, National Middle School
Basketball Association, LLC, has requested $10,100 in funding for the event and plans on
using 20 courts in Columbia and 4 courts in Jefferson City for its tournament that will take
place March 15-17, 2024.
Ziervogel mentioned the increased demand in the tournament and its scheduling conflict
with the MSHSAA Basketball Championships that has forced the organizer to utilize
courts in Jefferson City along with the courts generally used in Columbia. This only
represents a small portion of the event.
Arnold inquired about whether this organization was the same organization that has
hosted an event in Columbia in the past. It was confirmed that this event has taken place
the past two years in Columbia.
Calfee mentioned that the scheduled 2020 event was cancelled due to Covid-19, and
questioned where the approved $15,000 of funding for that event went. It was shared that
the event was funded at the $15,000 level in 2020, however with the event being canceled,
the organizer used those funds for the event in 2022 and did not apply for additional funds
for that year. The event took place in Columbia again in 2023 and received $7,500. Daniel
asked why the group previously asked for $15,000 and is now only asking for $10,100.
The requested funding amount centered around facility costs. Arnold and Ausmus
indicated that the staff initially focused primarily on attracting the organization to the city
in its first year in the city to replace MSHSAA Basketball, but the organization was aware
that getting MSHSAA Basketball back was a priority.
Egan made a motion to fund the event at $7,500; Marcks seconded. All in favor.
Motion carried.
